34th Annual Meeting of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation

The main aim in creating the programme for this meeting was to combine the conventional and the continuously evolving aspects of the work with new challenges. The last 10 years have radically changed the setting of HSCT, enabling procedures to cut through the barriers of age and tissue compatibility, which were previously considered insurmountable. As a consequence, the choice of the best combination of cellular source, conditioning regimen and immunosuppressive treatment has become all the more intriguing. A careful evaluation of the emerging data, the development and support of investigational trials and an efficient diffusion of medical information continue to be exciting tasks for the EBMT.

In order to encourage the participation of basic scientists two new topics have been added to the list: Experimental Stem Cell Transplantation and Immunotherapy. We are also delighted to announce a new prize for the best basic science abstract, which will be selected by the Local Organising Committee and the Chairs of the EBMT Developmental Committee. In addition, greater emphasis is to be placed on the Poster sessions, allowing for more space and time for discussion with authors.

The two Plenary Sessions are focused on rapidly changing issues in our clinical activity: The evolution of GvHD will be discussed in full, ranging from biological issues to the proposal of new classifications. Cord Blood as a source of stem cells has clearly now gone beyond the experimental niche and become a solid reality of our work: clinical skills and trends for best use will be presented by distinguished specialists.

The combination of this scientific meeting with the nurses’, data managers’ and statisticians’ programmes highlights the multidisciplinary character of the EBMT Annual Meeting.
